SPAG returns to his roots with “SPAG PACK 001,” a collection of six unofficial remixes and bootlegs available now as a free download via SoundCloud. Built entirely around tracks he loves, the release reconnects Mischa Reining with the format that played an important role in establishing his career and gives something directly back to the bass music community that has supported him for more than a decade.
For Reining, flips and remixes have always been more than side projects. Since the early days of his career, they have provided a space to take records that inspired him, pull them apart and rebuild them through his own unmistakably heavy lens. “SPAG PACK 001” brings that approach back to the forefront, this time without a commercial barrier. Six tracks, free to download, made for the fans.
“Dubstep gave me a career, and flips & remixes were a huge part of that journey. I’ve spent years taking tracks I love and turning them into something of my own. Now I want to give some of that energy back to the community that made this whole thing possible. Free flips & remixes,” says SPAG.
The pack arrives during a defining year for Reining. After more than a decade performing and releasing music as Spag Heddy, he introduced the SPAG identity earlier this year, opening the new chapter with “Messiah” in March before following it with the “THIS IS: SPAG” EP in May.
Rather than abandoning what came before, SPAG represents a more focused evolution of the artist Reining has spent 15 years building. The colorful, playful world associated with Spag Heddy has given way to something darker and more deliberate. Grit, distortion and raw energy now sit at the center of the project, while its visual identity has been reduced to black, white and fragments of red through cutout collage and mixed-media influences drawn from punk and skate culture.
“SPAG PACK 001” fits naturally into that evolution. While the sound and aesthetic have become tougher and more uncompromising, the release reaches directly back to the foundations of Reining’s career. It connects the new SPAG chapter with the remix culture and community-driven energy that helped shape everything that came before it.
Over the past 15 years, Mischa Reining has built an international reputation for hard-hitting bass music and high-energy live performances. Under the Spag Heddy name, his catalog earned support from some of electronic music’s biggest names, including Skrillex, Excision, Subtronics and NGHTMRE. He has also delivered official remixes for artists including The Chainsmokers, Krewella and SLANDER, while touring extensively through headline shows, festivals and major support runs alongside artists such as Zomboy, Flux Pavilion, Excision and Zeds Dead.
That history remains part of SPAG, but the presentation has changed. The cartoon aesthetic has been stripped away. The sound is heavier, the imagery more abrasive and the creative direction more intentional. What remains is the core of what Reining has been doing since 2011: taking bass music apart, rebuilding it in his own image and pushing it toward something harder.
With “SPAG PACK 001,” that philosophy comes full circle. Instead of positioning the release as another milestone in a rebrand, SPAG is using it to reconnect with the culture that helped build his career in the first place. It is a free collection made from tracks he loves, transformed through the sound he has spent years developing and handed directly back to the listeners who have been there for the journey.
