The artist formerly known as Spag Heddy launches a new series of unofficial remixes and bootlegs, flipping tracks from Zeds Dead, SLANDER, Ray Volpe, Knock2, Subtronics and Eptic
After more than a decade of building a reputation around explosive bass music, SPAG, formerly known as Spag Heddy, is reconnecting with the sound and creative freedom that helped launch his career. On September 2, the Dutch-born, Barcelona-based producer will release “SPAG PACK 001,” a six-track collection of unofficial remixes and bootlegs available as a free download via his SoundCloud.
The pack features SPAG’s own takes on music from Zeds Dead, SLANDER, Ray Volpe, Knock2, Subtronics and Eptic, bringing together six flips designed with the energy and immediacy of the dancefloor in mind. Rather than approaching the project as a conventional release, SPAG is using the pack to revisit a format that played a defining role in his earliest years as a producer.
Remixes, bootlegs and flips were an essential part of Mischa Reining’s rise after he began releasing music in 2011. They gave him room to experiment, reinterpret tracks he loved and develop the hard-hitting bass sound that would eventually take him around the world. Fifteen years later, “SPAG PACK 001” brings that process full circle, returning to the culture of sharing music freely while giving something directly back to the bass community that supported him from the beginning.
The release also offers another look at the creative direction behind the newly introduced SPAG identity. After operating as Spag Heddy for more than a decade, Reining shortened the project to SPAG this year and used the change to open a darker and more focused chapter in his career.
Where Spag Heddy often embraced colour, humour and playfulness, SPAG is built around grit, distortion and raw energy. That shift extends beyond the music into the project’s visual language, which strips things back to a stark palette of black, white and red. Collage-driven artwork and references to punk and skate culture give the project a rougher, less polished identity that mirrors the intensity of the music itself.
“SPAG PACK 001” captures that philosophy in a format closely connected to Reining’s beginnings. These are tracks made to hit hard rather than fit neatly into a traditional release cycle, combining the spontaneity of bootleg culture with the heavier direction of the SPAG era. The “001” designation also introduces the release as a pack, leaving the concept open for further collections as SPAG continues exploring this new chapter.
Reining’s evolution arrives after more than 15 years in bass music. Since emerging in 2011, the Dutch producer has developed a distinctive approach that combines aggressive dubstep foundations with melodic elements, earning support from some of the scene’s most influential artists.
His music has appeared in sets from Skrillex, Excision, Subtronics, NGHTMRE and other major names across electronic music, while his catalogue includes official remixes for artists including The Chainsmokers, Krewella and SLANDER. On the touring side, he has joined Zomboy and Flux Pavilion on the road, appeared as direct support for Excision and Zeds Dead, and completed headline tours across multiple international markets.
Now, rather than distancing himself from the unofficial edits that helped establish his name, SPAG is putting them back at the forefront.
With “SPAG PACK 001,” the producer connects two points in his career: the bootleg-driven experimentation that helped him break through and the darker, stripped-back identity defining where he is heading next.
