Los Angeles-based trio Cheat Codes and acclaimed singer-songwriter Julia Church, who hails from Durban and is now London-based, have teamed up for a new single, “Modern Tragedy.” The track merges Cheat Codes’ signature blend of dance-electronic and pop with Julia’s ethereal, soulful vocals. With its driving beats, undulating basslines, and wistful melodies, “Modern Tragedy” explores the emotional rollercoaster of modern dating.
Cheat Codes shared their vision behind the song: “In a world where tragedy feels constant, we took that pain and turned it into something greater. Working with Julia, we didn’t just create a track – we crafted a story that reflects the beauty hidden within dark moments. Even in chaos, there’s harmony to be found.”
Julia Church explained the inspiration behind her lyrics: “‘Modern Tragedy’ is about navigating the highs and lows of dating today—feeling like you’re stuck in a cycle of excitement and disappointment. I wrote it after being ghosted by someone I really liked. Sometimes all you can do is laugh (and write a song about it).”
Known for her collaborations with electronic heavyweights like John Summit, Diplo, Gorgon City, and Robin Schulz, Julia Church’s vocals bring a new depth to Cheat Codes’ dynamic production. Following their recent pop ballad “Bloom” with Train, “Modern Tragedy” marks Cheat Codes’ return to the dance-electronic scene.
